IS201701: Improv Sampler

Curious about the improvisational piecing (“improv”) you’re seeing in modern quilts? Whether you’re a bit intimidated because you like your ruler and precise measurements, or intrigued by a different way to approach piecing (or maybe a little bit of both), this workshop is for you!

Participants will cut, piece, cut and piece again to make different blocks and learn to improvise along the way. Together we’ll tackle cutting and piecing: squares, strips, triangles, and curves, all improvisationally.

Level: Beginner improv. Participants should know how to use their sewing machine and a rotary cutter.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe what improvisational piecing is and isn’t.
  2. Cut and stitch blocks using simple improv techniques.
  3. Assemble blocks into a lap quilt using a layout of their choosing.
